Panna Cotta is a classic Italian dessert and the literal translation means cooked cream. This dessert consists in sweetened cream that is cooked and then thickened with gelatin. It is delicious, very simple to make, and it pairs great with fresh fruit, jams, or flavors like espresso coffee.
This silky and delicious dessert can be made ahead of time which is perfect if you are having guests over. Definitely will impress!
Ingredients:
4 sheets of gelatin sheets (I use Dr. Oetker´s)
100 grams of white sugar
75 ml whole milk or non-fat milk
400 ml heavy cream (whipping cream)
60 ml espresso shot **
1 small dark chocolate bar (garnish)
** The espresso shot can be substitute with 1 ½ tbsp of instant coffee dissolved in 60 ml boiling water.
Instructions:
Start by softening your gelatin sheets. Place them in a bowl with cold water and let them rest for about 5-10 minutes until they are softened.
Make your espresso shot or instant coffee if you are using this as a substitute.
In a medium pot add the milk, heavy cream, sugar and coffee over medium heat and simmer, do not let it boil. Remove from heat.
Squeeze the excess water from your gelatin sheets and add them to your hot cream stirring to mix well and completely dissolved. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a jug to make it extra smooth and to remove any clumps. Set aside and let it slightly cool.
Pour the panna cotta into serving glasses or ramekins. Place in the fridge and leave to set for about 5 to 6 hours.
When ready to serve, use a vegetable peeler to create shavings from the chocolate bar and sprinkle on top of the panna cotta.
